Jazz Band Audition Materials

Jazz Etude - All instruments

Learn this etude as it is written. You will use the following playalong recordings at your audition. I recommed learning it slowly at first and then playing with the playalong once the tempo is achieved. Don't just hack through it! Right click (PC) or Control click (MAC) to download the file to your computer.

Alto and Bari Sax - Ab Blues (it says F but I transposed it to work for you)
Trumpet and Tenor - Eb Blues
All other instruments (trombone, guitar, piano, vibes) - F Blues

Additional Information:

Guitar Players - learn the notes of the etude and learn the chords to play them in the style of Freddie Green.

Bass Players - learn the notes of the etude and learn to walk through the chord progression.

Piano Players - learn the notes of the etude and learn to play the chords as accompaniment for yourself while playing the etude; and also as you would play for someone else playing the etude. In other words, learn to comp the changes.

Drummers - Learn the etude and be able to play it rhythmically and melodically on the drum set. By this I mean be able to give the listener a sense of the written etude while playing the drum set. You can indicate pitch (high and low) by choosing those sounds on the drums set but you don't have to follow the pitch exactly. Secondly, play time and play as if you were accompanying someone else playing that etude. Where would you accent? Fill? etc...
