Summer Workshops 2012 – You’re Not Going to Believe How Great These Are!!!
This is the eighth year we are offering Summer Workshops to our MTHS students. 2004 was the first year and we had a really great Jazz Ensemble 1 workshop. In 2005, we began a tradition of offering both jazz band and concert band workshops. These workshops have proven to be invaluable in allowing us to have successful school years. The extra time and attention that the students receive really helps them to become better as individuals and as ensemble members. We get to know one another, set goals and priorities musically and otherwise, and hit the ground running in September.
I am trying to keep the costs down as much as possible while still ensuring the highest quality of experiences. I think you will find that these workshops are quite a deal compared to other summer music camps around. And in my opinion, the quality and experience are superior to what you will find anywhere else. And the connections made with local professionals and teachers are incredibly valuable.
Concert Band Workshop with Professor Timothy Salzman - August 6-10, 2012
Our rehearsals will be conducted by UW Professor Timothy Salzman. Professor Salzman is one of the most sought after college band directors in the nation and we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with him for a whole week. He selects outstanding literature for our group and will prepare the ensemble for our concert on Friday night. In addition to learning directly from one of the best in the business, numerous students have developed relationships with Professor Salzman that have helped them gain admittance to the UW or helped them to obtain scholarship money. (Please read more about Professor Salzman below.)
Our rehearsals are part of Professor Salzman’s UW music education course entitled “MUSED 410 - Instrumental Rehearsal Techniques”. We will be observed by and work with additional music educators who are improving their rehearsal techniques through this summer course. Our group will be rehearsing and preparing for a final concert while also learning fundamental concepts necessary for our success during the school year. This summer workshop experience has helped to transform our concert band program in the last few years. It is an incredible experience that students enjoy and it pays great dividends all year long.
Local professional musicians will assist the students in developing their skills and will also perform for them. Some of the clinicians have included Alisha Suarez, Sean Osborn, Danny Helseth, Brian Chin, Jay Scott, David Kappy, Mary Kantor, Fred Winkler, and Rob Tucker. These working professionals and outstanding teachers in the greater Puget Sound are from UPS in Tacoma to Western Washington University in Bellingham!
This workshop is designed for all concert band members and MTHS students from all bands are highly encouraged to take advantage of this great opportunity. Chamber Winds students are required to attend.
Timothy Salzman is a Ruth Sutton Waters Endowed Professor at the University of Washington, where he serves as conductor of the UW Wind Ensemble and administers the concert band program. He also teaches students enrolled in the undergraduate and graduate instrumental conducting program.
Salzman previously served as Director of Bands at Montana State University, where he founded the MSU Wind Ensemble. From 1978 to 1983 he was band director in the Herscher, Illinois public school system, during which time the band program received several regional and national awards in solo/ensemble, concert and marching band competition.
Salzman holds degrees from Wheaton College (bachelor of music education), and Northern Illinois University (master of music in low brass performance), and has studied privately with Arnold Jacobs, former tubist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has numerous publications for bands with C. L. Barnhouse, Arranger’s Publications, Columbia Pictures, and Hal Leonard publishing companies, and has served on the staff of new music reviews for The Instrumentalist magazine. Salzman is a national artist/clinician for the Yamaha Corporation of America and has been a conductor, adjudicator, or arranger for bands in over 35 states, Canada, England, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, and Russia. In autumn 1997 he was Visiting Professor at the Senzoku Gakuen Uozu School of Music in Uozu, Japan.
He is compiling editor and co-author, with several current and former UW students, of A Composer’s Insight: Thoughts, Analysis and Commentary on Contemporary Masterpieces for Wind Band, a new series of books on contemporary wind band composers published by Meredith Music Publications, a subsidiary of the Hal Leonard Corporation.
MTHS Jazz Band Workshop - August 13-17, 2011
We are going to take the band to the next level and this is a great way to do it! Participants will hone their large and small group playing skills through extended rehearsals and instruction from working professional jazz musicians, which in the past has included Steve Korn, Doug Miller, Michael Stegner, Chris Spencer, Brad Allison, Steve Treseler, Jay Thomas, Dawn Clement, Dave Marriott, and Nathan Vetter. Professionals will also perform for the students. We will spend time learning about and dealing with aspects of total musicianship that we don’t have time to address during the school year. The extended time together will provide us with a retreat-like atmosphere that will most certainly encourage friendships, shared vision, and motivation. Mr. Faul will lead the full ensemble rehearsals. The Jazz Band Workshp is open to all jazz band students and participation by Jazz 1 students is required.
